[9:30 AM, 11/27/2023] The newswave.ug: Farmers Requests President Museveni to Reinstate Operation Wealth Creation for Agricultural Empowerment
Since 2013 to 2020 operation wealth creation always known us OWC was in charge of distributing agricultural inputs,do research, educate farmers on how to boost and change from substance farming to commercial farming.
Its achievements have been visible on ground Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) in Uganda, since its inception, aimed at transforming the agricultural sector and improve the livelihoods of Ugandans. While the success of such programs can vary, there have been reported achievements attributed to Operation Wealth Creation:
Increased Agricultural Productivity: OWC has contributed to enhancing agricultural productivity by providing farmers with improved seeds, fertilizers, and other essential inputs. This has led to increased yields and improved food security in certain regions.
Livestock Improvement: The program has also focused on livestock development, providing support to farmers in areas such as animal husbandry, veterinary services, and the distribution of improved breeds. This has positively impacted the income and nutritional status of participating communities.
Poverty Alleviation: OWC’s interventions in agriculture and agribusiness have played a role in reducing poverty levels by creating income-generating opportunities for farmers. Through improved agricultural practices, farmers can enhance their income and quality of life.
Skills Development: Operation Wealth Creation has been involved in training farmers on modern and sustainable agricultural practices. This skill development contributes to building a more knowledgeable and efficient farming community.
Rural Infrastructure Development: In some instances, OWC initiatives have included the improvement of rural infrastructure such as roads and irrigation systems. This not only facilitates easier access to markets but also supports more efficient farming practices.
Job Creation: The program has contributed to job creation, especially in the agricultural value chain. This includes opportunities in farming, agro-processing, and related activities, thus addressing issues of unemployment and underemployment.
Technology Adoption: OWC has encouraged the adoption of modern agricultural technologies, promoting efficiency and sustainability in farming practices.
Community Empowerment: Through its various interventions, OWC has empowered local communities, fostering a sense of ownership and self-reliance in agricultural activities.
It’s important to note that while there have been achievements, there may also be challenges and areas for improvement. Additionally, the impact of OWC can vary across different regions and communities within Uganda.
As concerned Ugandan citizens who deeply values the progress and development of our nation we realised that it’s high time to request you to re in-state OWC back to the field because the agricultural growth is instead going backwards. OWC used to distribute seedling, give out livestock and also ensure infrastructural development which enabled us to do some good work However, with the recent shift to the Parish Development Model, there seems to be a void that has impacted the effectiveness of agricultural growth. Many beneficiaries are expressing concerns about the new model, citing challenges such as extortion of money, too much red tape, biasness before receiving the intended support.
And if the model funds where supported with the OWC inputs then our target of shifting from subsistence farming to commercial farming could easily be achieved.
When you look at coffee farming it has gone back because we no longer receive seedlings, maize production is still low compared to the past 3years back when OWC provided seeds, in other regions like eastern almost each village had freshian cows but now you can take time to find one and currently milk is at 1000 shs yet it was at 600 shs.
We humbly request your intervention to reconsider and empower Operation Wealth Creation, bringing it back to the forefront of agricultural development. The tangible fruits of this initiative were visible, and reinstating it would not only address the current challenges but also reinvigorate the momentum towards achieving sustainable commercial farming.
The success of Operation Wealth Creation has been evident in the positive impact it had on agricultural productivity and the livelihoods of many Ugandans. By reinstating and empowering this program, we believe it will not only address the current challenges faced by the Parish Development Model but also ensure a more effective and transparent distribution of agricultural inputs.
Your visionary leadership has been instrumental in shaping the progress of our nation, and we trust that your support for Operation Wealth Creation will further strengthen Uganda’s position as an agricultural powerhouse in the region.
Thank you for your unwavering commitment to the prosperity of our beloved Uganda
For God and my country.
